Flash Write Error

ABB · AC500-S Safety Controller

What does E2-13 mean?

An error occurred while the Safety PLC was attempting to write to its internal flash memory. This indicates potential memory corruption or hardware failure, affecting PLC operation and the ability to save configurations or updates.

Common Causes

  • Flash memory wear-out due to reaching the maximum specified write cycles.
  • Interruption of the 24VDC power supply during an active flash write operation.
  • Firmware defect in the flash memory management routine of the Safety PLC.
  • Hardware fault in the flash memory controller or the memory chip itself.
  • Exceeding the rated operating temperature for the Safety PLC, affecting memory stability.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Measure the 24VDC supply voltage at the Safety PLC's power terminals during program download attempts to detect sags below 21.6V.

  2. 2

    2. Attempt to re-download the application program or configuration data to the Safety PLC.

  3. 3

    3. Perform a full power cycle of the Safety PLC (disconnecting 24VDC for 30 seconds) before attempting another write operation.

  4. 4

    4. Check for any active alarms or warnings from the connected PM5x CPU that might indicate communication issues during write attempts.

  5. 5

    5. Update the Safety PLC firmware to the latest version, which may include flash management improvements.

  6. 6

    6. Replace the Safety PLC module if write errors continue to occur across multiple attempts for different data types.
