F-Parameter Configuration and Address Mismatch

ABB · AC500-S Safety Controller

What does E3-28 mean?

The configured F-Parameters for the I/O module do not align with the physical address switch setting on the module. This mismatch prevents proper communication and operation, potentially rendering safety functions inoperative.

Common Causes

  • Physical address switches (e.g., DIP switches) on the safety I/O module are set to a different address than configured in the PROFIsafe master (e.g., Safety PLC).
  • Incorrect F-Parameter configuration within the safety PLC engineering software for the specific I/O module's PROFIsafe address or F_Source_Address.
  • A faulty physical address switch on the I/O module is providing an incorrect address reading despite being visually set correctly.
  • Firmware corruption on the I/O module preventing it from correctly reading or applying its internally configured F-Parameters.
  • Mismatch between the GSDML file version used in the safety PLC project and the actual firmware version of the safety I/O module, affecting F-Parameter interpretation.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Power down the system, locate the physical address switches (e.g., DIP switches) on the safety I/O module, and visually verify their settings against the PROFIsafe configuration in the engineering software.

  2. 2

    2. If a mismatch is identified, adjust the physical address switches on the I/O module to precisely match the configured PROFIsafe F_Address and then power cycle the system.

  3. 3

    3. Connect to the safety PLC via engineering software and verify the F-Parameter configuration for the affected I/O module, ensuring the PROFIsafe address matches the physical switch setting.

  4. 4

    4. Perform a firmware update on the safety I/O module if available and recommended by the manufacturer, then re-download the safety configuration.

  5. 5

    5. If the address switches appear physically damaged or the fault persists after matching configurations, replace the safety I/O module.
