E2-3

I/O Bus Timeout

ABB · System

What does E2-3 mean?

A timeout occurred during an operation on the I/O bus module. This indicates that a communication or processing step did not complete within its expected timeframe, possibly due to bus congestion, a slow response from a connected device, or a module malfunction. This can lead to unresponsive I/O.

Common Causes

  • Excessive latency or communication delay on the I/O bus due to high traffic or congestion.
  • Incorrect baud rate (e.g., 115200 bps vs 9600 bps) or data parity setting on a serial I/O module.
  • Termination resistor missing or incorrectly installed on the I/O bus (e.g., PROFIBUS DP).
  • Intermittent physical connection fault on the I/O bus cable (e.g., loose connector, broken strand).
  • Bus master (e.g., PLC CPU) configured with too short a watchdog timer for the I/O slave (e.g., parameter P7-03).

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Verify the termination resistor presence and value (e.g., 120 Ohms) at both ends of the I/O bus segment.

  2. 2

    2. Check all I/O bus cable connectors (e.g., M12, RJ45) for proper seating and locking.

  3. 3

    3. Inspect the I/O bus cable for physical damage, bends, or crushing over its entire length.

  4. 4

    4. Adjust the I/O bus master's watchdog timer parameter (e.g., P7-03) to a higher value in the configuration.

  5. 5

    5. Monitor I/O bus traffic and communication statistics using a network analyzer tool.

  6. 6

    6. Isolate individual I/O modules by temporary removal to identify the one causing the delay.
