E2-8482

I/O Bus Initialization Timeout

ABB · System

What does E2-8482 mean?

An I/O bus module timed out during its initialization sequence. This critical error suggests a problem preventing the module from becoming ready for operation, possibly due to a hardware fault, firmware issue, or communication problem. The module will not be functional.

Common Causes

  • I/O module power supply failure (e.g., 24VDC not present or too low).
  • Incorrect or missing I/O bus termination (e.g., PROFIBUS DP, CAN bus).
  • Communication cable fault (e.g., short circuit, open circuit) preventing module detection.
  • Hardware fault on the I/O module preventing its boot sequence completion.
  • Incorrect GSD/GSDML file used for the module, leading to improper initialization parameters.
  • Bus master (e.g., PLC CPU) attempting to initialize module with incorrect address (e.g., station 5 vs station 6).

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Verify the 24VDC power supply to the specific I/O module using a multimeter at its power terminals.

  2. 2

    2. Check the I/O bus cable for continuity and proper shielding (e.g., resistance between shield and ground).

  3. 3

    3. Inspect the bus termination resistors for correct placement and value (e.g., 120 Ohm).

  4. 4

    4. Ensure the I/O module's address DIP switches (e.g., SW1) match the configured address in the PLC program.

  5. 5

    5. Perform a power cycle of the specific I/O module or the entire I/O rack.

  6. 6

    6. Replace the suspected I/O module with a known good spare.
