E2-9258

I/O Bus Communication Breakdown

ABB · System

What does E2-9258 mean?

Communication has been completely lost with an I/O bus module, indicating a breakdown in the communication link. This critical failure means the module is no longer accessible or functional within the system, leading to a complete loss of I/O control for that module.

Common Causes

  • Physical damage to the I/O bus communication cable (e.g., severed Ethernet cable, crushed fiber optic).
  • Loose or corroded connectors on the I/O bus (e.g., screw terminals, RJ45 jacks).
  • Incorrect addressing or duplicate addresses on the I/O bus (e.g., two devices with IP 192.168.1.10).
  • Failed bus transceiver or communication chip on an I/O module.
  • Excessive electrical interference or EMI affecting the communication signal integrity.
  • Missing or incorrect bus termination at the end of a serial bus segment.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Inspect the entire length of the I/O bus communication cable for visible damage or kinks.

  2. 2

    2. Verify the integrity of all bus connectors (e.g., tighten screw terminals, re-seat RJ45 plugs).

  3. 3

    3. Use a cable tester (e.g., Ethernet continuity tester) to check for breaks or shorts in the cable.

  4. 4

    4. Check the I/O module's network status LEDs (e.g., 'Link', 'Act') for communication activity.

  5. 5

    5. Confirm the I/O module's address (e.g., Profinet name, IP address, DIP switch setting) matches the PLC configuration.

  6. 6

    6. Measure the bus signal levels (e.g., RS485 differential voltage) using an oscilloscope to detect noise or attenuation.
