I/O Module Cross-Talk Error

What does E3-28 mean?

A cross-talk error has been detected on an I/O bus module. This means unwanted signal coupling is occurring between adjacent channels, leading to incorrect readings or control actions, and potentially compromising system integrity. This interference affects signal reliability.

Common Causes

  • Insufficient shielding on analog input/output cables, allowing signal coupling.
  • Routing of high-current power cables too close to sensitive low-voltage signal cables (e.g., 4-20mA).
  • Ground loop issues in the I/O system, creating circulating currents that induce noise.
  • Improper termination of unused analog inputs/outputs, acting as antennas for noise.
  • Faulty or degraded I/O module internal components (e.g., opto-couplers, isolation circuits).
  • High frequency noise from nearby VFDs or switching power supplies.

    1. Inspect all signal cables connected to the I/O module for proper shielding connection at both ends (e.g., via ground terminals).

    2. Physically separate low-voltage signal cables from high-voltage or high-current power cables by a minimum distance (e.g., 300mm).

    3. Verify correct grounding scheme for the I/O system, ensuring a single-point ground connection where applicable.

    4. Terminate unused analog inputs (e.g., with a 500 Ohm resistor for current inputs) to prevent noise pickup.
