F13

Ground Fault

Allen-Bradley · PowerFlex 4 Adjustable Frequency

What does F13 mean?

A ground fault has been detected, indicating an unintended current path from the motor phases or external wiring to ground. This protection prevents electrical shock and damage to the drive or motor.

Common Causes

  • Insulation breakdown in motor windings or power cable to ground.
  • Moisture or contamination ingress into motor or drive components.
  • Faulty drive output stage leakage to heatsink or chassis.
  • Grounding issue in the motor power supply wiring.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Disconnect the motor from the drive output terminals (U, V, W).

  2. 2

Measure insulation resistance between each motor phase (U, V, W) and the motor frame using a megger at 500VDC; expect a reading greater than 1 MΩ.

  3. 3

Measure insulation resistance between each drive output terminal (U, V, W) and earth ground with the motor disconnected; expect a reading greater than 1 MΩ.

  4. 4

Inspect the motor cable and external wiring between the drive output terminals and the motor for any physical damage or signs of insulation breakdown.
