F41

Motor Phase UV Short Circuit

Allen-Bradley · PowerFlex 40 Adjustable Frequency

What does F41 mean?

This fault detects a short circuit condition between motor phases U and V at the drive output. This implies an insulation failure within the motor windings or a direct short in the cabling connecting the drive to the motor.

Common Causes

  • Direct short circuit between phase U and V conductors within the motor cable due to insulation failure or damage.
  • Insulation failure or winding rub-through between phase U and V within the motor windings.
  • Loose strands or improper termination causing phase U and V to contact in the motor terminal box or drive output terminals.
  • Contamination (e.g., conductive dust, metal shavings) bridging phase U and V connections in the terminal area.
  • Internal drive output stage component failure (e.g., IGBTs) causing a direct short between phase U and V outputs.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Disconnect the motor cables (U, V, W) from the drive output terminals. Use an ohmmeter to measure resistance between motor cable phase U and phase V conductors.

  2. 2

Use an ohmmeter to measure resistance directly at the motor terminals between phase U and phase V, after disconnecting from the cable.

  3. 3

Visually inspect the motor cable's insulation integrity, focusing on the conductors for phase U and V, especially at bends or connection points.

  4. 4

Inspect the motor terminal box and the drive output terminal block for phases U and V for any loose strands, conductive debris, or signs of arcing between them.

  5. 5

Check for correct wire gauge and termination practices to ensure no physical contact or potential for shorting between phase U and V.
