Sensorless Vector Autotune Failure

Allen-Bradley · PowerFlex 40 Adjustable Frequency

What does F80 mean?

This fault signifies that the autotune function for Sensorless Vector Control (SVC) was either intentionally cancelled by the user or failed to complete successfully. This might prevent optimal motor control.

Common Causes

  • Autotune process was manually interrupted or cancelled before completion (e.g., by issuing a Stop command during the tune).
  • Load connected to the motor during the autotune process, preventing accurate measurement of motor electrical parameters.
  • Incorrect motor nameplate data (e.g., P0-30 [Motor Rated Current], P0-31 [Motor Rated RPM]) entered into the drive prior to autotune.
  • Insufficient drive capacity or motor instability during the autotune, causing the drive to detect an error and abort the process.
  • Faulty motor or motor cabling (e.g., high resistance connection, phase imbalance), preventing accurate parameter identification.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Ensure the motor is completely disconnected from any mechanical load before initiating the autotune process.

  2. 2

Verify that all motor nameplate data (P0-30 to P0-33) is accurately entered into the drive's parameters.

  3. 3

Initiate the autotune function again (e.g., by setting P0-50 [Motor Autotune] to '1' or '2') and allow it to complete without interruption.

  4. 4

Monitor motor current and speed feedback during the autotune for erratic behavior that might indicate motor or cable issues.

  5. 5

If repeated failures occur, perform a manual motor resistance and inductance test using a multimeter/LCR meter and compare values to expected motor data.
