Serial communication timeout

Danfoss · VLT 2800 Variable Speed Drive

What does 17 mean?

No serial communication is being received by the adjustable frequency drive. This warning is active only when parameter 514 (Bus time interval function) is set to a value other than OFF. If set to 'Stop and trip', it will escalate from a warning to an alarm after a timeout.

Common Causes

  • Loss of communication signal on the serial bus (e.g., RS-485, Modbus RTU) due to cable break or disconnection.
  • Incorrect communication parameters (e.g., baud rate P510, parity P511, address P512) configured in the drive or the master device.
  • Master device (PLC, HMI) stopped sending commands or is powered off.
  • Bus termination resistor missing or incorrectly set on the communication network, causing signal reflection.
  • Excessive electrical noise on the communication lines, interfering with data transmission.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Verify the communication cable connections at the drive's serial port (e.g., RJ-45, terminal block) and at the master device.

  2. 2

Confirm that the drive's communication parameters (P510, P511, P512, P514) match the master device's settings and network requirements.

  3. 3

Check the master device (PLC, controller) status and program logic to ensure it is actively sending communication frames.

  4. 4

Measure voltage levels on the communication bus lines (e.g., RS-485 A/B differential voltage) to confirm signal integrity using an oscilloscope.

  5. 5

Inspect the communication bus for proper termination resistors at both ends of the segment.

  6. 6

Temporarily disable or bypass potential noise sources (e.g., contactors, switching power supplies) to diagnose electromagnetic interference.
