Internal Fan Fault

Danfoss · VLT HVAC Drive FC 102

What does 23 mean?

A fault has been detected with one of the drive's internal cooling fans. This indicates a potential fan failure, which can lead to overheating and premature failure of the drive's internal components if not resolved, due to inadequate heat dissipation.

Common Causes

  • Internal cooling fan (e.g., 24VDC fan) motor failure (e.g., open winding, worn bearings, seized rotor).
  • Obstruction (e.g., dust, debris) preventing the fan blades from rotating freely or causing reduced airflow.
  • Loose or disconnected fan power connector (e.g., X3) on the drive's control board.
  • Failure of the drive's internal fan control circuit or fan speed monitoring sensor (e.g., Hall effect sensor).
  • Incorrect parameter setting for fan supervision (e.g., P14-03, Fan Supervision) causing overly sensitive fault detection.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. De-energize the drive. Visually inspect all internal cooling fans for physical damage (e.g., broken blades) or any foreign objects obstructing rotation.

  2. 2

    2. Manually attempt to spin the fan blades to check for free movement and confirm that bearings are not seized.

  3. 3

    3. Verify the fan's power supply voltage (e.g., 24VDC) at its connector (e.g., X3) on the control board when the drive is commanded to operate.

  4. 4

    4. Confirm that the fan's electrical connector (e.g., X3) is securely seated on the control board and free from corrosion.

  5. 5

    5. If the fan is confirmed faulty, replace the entire internal fan assembly according to the drive manufacturer's specific instructions and part numbers.
