External Fan Fault

Danfoss · VLT HVAC Drive FC 102

What does 24 mean?

A fault has been detected with an external cooling fan connected to the drive or its enclosure. This can lead to insufficient cooling for the drive or its system, resulting in overheating and potential trips or damage to the equipment.

Common Causes

  • External fan motor bearing seizure or mechanical obstruction (e.g., debris).
  • Loss of 24VDC or 230VAC power supply to the external cooling fan.
  • Damage or insulation breakdown in the external fan's power or feedback wiring.
  • External fan's speed feedback signal (if used) is missing or out of range.
  • Incorrect wiring of the external fan to the drive's designated fan terminals.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Disconnect power to the drive and external fan, then visually inspect the fan blades for obstructions (e.g., dust, debris) and remove them.

  2. 2

    2. With power off, manually rotate the fan blades to check for smooth operation or bearing seizure.

  3. 3

    3. Measure the supply voltage at the fan's power input terminals (e.g., X12/F+ and X12/F-) to verify proper voltage (24VDC or 230VAC).

  4. 4

    4. Verify continuity and inspect the integrity of the external fan's control and power wiring between the drive and the fan unit.

  5. 5

    5. Replace the external cooling fan unit if it fails to operate with correct supply voltage or exhibits excessive mechanical noise.
