I/O Fault (Digital/Analog/Relay)

Danfoss · VLT 2800 Variable Speed Drive

What does 45 mean?

An Input/Output (I/O) fault has occurred, affecting digital inputs/outputs, relay outputs, or analog inputs/outputs. This means the drive cannot correctly receive external signals or send control commands, disrupting automation processes. This could be due to external wiring, sensor issues, or internal I/O circuitry failure.

Common Causes

  • Short circuit or open circuit on a digital output (DO) or digital input (DI) line, exceeding current limits or preventing signal detection.
  • Incorrect wiring or connection of external I/O devices to the drive's terminals (e.g., mis-wired start signal to DI1).
  • Faulty analog input (AI) or analog output (AO) circuit due to overvoltage, short circuit, or internal component failure.
  • Damaged relay output (RLY) contacts or coil, preventing proper switching or feedback.
  • Incorrect parameter settings for I/O functions (e.g., P2-10 for DI1 function, P2-40 for AI1 scaling) preventing expected operation.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Disconnect all external I/O wiring from the drive and check individual input/output terminals for short circuits using a multimeter.

  2. 2

    2. For digital inputs, measure the voltage at the respective terminal (e.g., DI1) to common, verifying correct voltage (24VDC for active).

  3. 3

    3. For analog inputs, measure the voltage or current at the respective terminal (e.g., AI1) and compare to the sensor's expected output.

  4. 4

    4. Activate a relay output (e.g., RLY1) via a parameter (e.g., P2-21 = 1) and measure continuity across its contacts (NO/NC).

  5. 5

    5. Reset I/O parameters to factory defaults (e.g., P2-00 = 0) and reconfigure them based on the application wiring diagram.

  6. 6

    6. Replace the control card if multiple I/O points exhibit faults after thorough troubleshooting.
