WARNING/ALARM 9

Inverter overloaded

Danfoss · VLT HVAC Basic FC 101

What does WARNING/ALARM 9 mean?

The frequency converter is experiencing an overload, with the internal thermal counter indicating that current levels are exceeding 100% for an extended duration. This activates electronic thermal protection, issuing a warning at 90% and an alarm trip at 100% to prevent damage. The drive cannot be reset until the counter falls below 90%.

Common Causes

  • Motor drawing excessive current due to mechanical overload on the driven equipment (e.g., jammed bearings, excessive friction, material buildup, pump cavitation).
  • Incorrect motor nameplate data (e.g., Parameter P1-22 'Motor Nominal Current' set too low, P1-23 'Motor Nominal Speed' incorrect) entered into the drive.
  • The frequency converter (drive) is undersized for the motor or the application's continuous load requirements.
  • Operation at very low speeds for extended periods without proper motor cooling (e.g., external cooling fan) if the motor is designed for constant speed operation.
  • High ambient temperature around the drive or obstructed cooling fins preventing proper heat dissipation from the inverter module.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Monitor the actual output current (e.g., Parameter P0-03 'Output Current') and compare it to the motor's nominal current (P1-22) and the drive's rated output current.

  2. 2

Perform a mechanical inspection of the driven equipment (e.g., pump, fan, conveyor) for any jams, blockages, or excessive friction that would increase motor load.

  3. 3

Verify all motor nameplate data (Parameters P1-20 to P1-25) is accurately entered into the drive's parameters, paying close attention to P1-22 'Motor Nominal Current'.

  4. 4

Check the drive's internal heatsink temperature (e.g., Parameter P0-05 'Heatsink Temp') and ensure sufficient airflow around the drive; verify cooling fans are operational and clear.

  5. 5

If the motor operates at low speeds for extended periods, check its ventilation and consider installing an independent cooling fan on the motor for adequate cooling.

  6. 6

Review the drive's overload protection settings (e.g., Parameter P5-00 'Motor Thermal Protection', P5-01 'Inverter Thermal Protection') and the current limits configured.
