Power Card Temperature Overload

Danfoss · VLT Micro Drive FC 51

What does 2 mean?

This fault signifies that the temperature of the drive's power card, which contains critical components like IGBTs, has exceeded its safe operating limit. Overheating can lead to premature component failure, reduced drive lifespan, and unexpected shutdowns to prevent damage.

Common Causes

  • Blocked or restricted cooling fan intake/exhaust vents on the drive heatsink.
  • Failed or degraded internal cooling fan (PWM controlled fan not spinning at commanded RPM).
  • Ambient temperature within the control cabinet exceeding the drive's specified operating limit (e.g., >40°C).
  • Insufficient clearance around the drive for proper airflow, causing heat recirculation.
  • Excessive switching frequency setting (Parameter P1-11) for the application's load profile, leading to higher IGBT losses.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Clean all cooling fins and fan grilles of the drive using compressed air to remove dust and debris.

  2. 2

Measure the internal temperature sensor reading through the drive's display or monitoring software (e.g., view parameter P0-15).

  3. 3

Verify the operation of the internal cooling fan by visually confirming rotation and measuring its supply voltage (if accessible).

  4. 4

Check the ambient temperature inside the electrical cabinet using a calibrated thermometer, ensuring it is within the drive's datasheet limits.

  5. 5

Adjust the drive's switching frequency (Parameter P1-11) to a lower value if the application allows, to reduce IGBT losses.
