Slow Down Warning

Danfoss · VLT Micro Drive FC 51

What does 8 mean?

This warning suggests that the drive is operating in a condition where it needs to reduce its output frequency or torque to maintain stable operation, often due to exceeding a current or voltage limit. While not an immediate trip, continued operation under these conditions can lead to a trip or reduced performance.

Common Causes

  • Motor operating close to or exceeding its rated current for an extended period, triggering the drive's thermal model (Parameter P1-30).
  • Input voltage sag below the nominal operating range (e.g., 360VAC for a 400V drive) during heavy load, requiring increased current.
  • Output current exceeding the set current limit (Parameter P1-08) due to mechanical overload.
  • Drive heatsink temperature approaching its upper limit, causing the drive to reduce output to prevent an overload trip.
  • Parameter P1-07 (Overload Reaction) set to 'Slow Down' instead of 'Trip'.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Monitor the drive's output current (e.g., via Parameter P0-03) and compare it against the motor's rated current and drive's nominal current.

  2. 2

Measure the AC input voltage at the drive's L1, L2, L3 terminals under load to detect voltage sags.

  3. 3

Verify the motor's mechanical load by manually checking for friction or obstructions.

  4. 4

Check the drive's heatsink temperature (e.g., Parameter P0-15) and ensure adequate ventilation in the control cabinet.

  5. 5

Increase the current limit (Parameter P1-08) if the application legitimately requires higher peak current, but ensure motor protection is maintained.
