UL

Abnormal low pressure (Low-pressure switch activated)

Mitsubishi Electric · PUZ-HA30/36NHA4 Outdoor Unit

What does UL mean?

The 63L low-pressure switch activates, indicating system pressure below -0.07 MPa (-10 PSIG) during compressor operation. This critical fault suggests a closed outdoor unit stop valve, significant refrigerant leakage/shortage, or a malfunction in the linear expansion valve. Ignoring this can lead to severe and irreparable damage to the compressor.

Common Causes

  • Significant refrigerant leak in the system, leading to critically low charge and sub-atmospheric suction pressure.
  • Fully closed liquid line service valve or suction line service valve, creating a vacuum on the low-pressure side.
  • Restriction in the refrigerant circuit (e.g., clogged filter drier, kinked line) severely impeding refrigerant flow to the evaporator.
  • Malfunctioning low-pressure switch (63L) tripping prematurely due to calibration drift or internal fault.
  • Insufficient heat load in the conditioned space, causing refrigerant to remain in the evaporator and reduce suction pressure significantly.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Connect a manifold gauge set to the suction and liquid lines to measure system pressures and confirm low-pressure activation (e.g., below -10 PSIG).

  2. 2

Perform a thorough leak detection scan of the entire refrigerant circuit (e.g., using an electronic leak detector or soap bubbles).

  3. 3

Verify all refrigerant service valves (e.g., liquid line, suction line) are fully open as per system requirements.

  4. 4

Test the low-pressure switch (63L) for continuity at various pressures using a regulated nitrogen source and a calibrated gauge.

  5. 5

Measure the temperature difference across the filter drier to identify potential blockages (excessive drop indicates a clog).
