E36.

Brake Error

Omron · MX2 Series Type V2 Compact Inverter

What does E36. mean?

This error indicates that the inverter cannot verify the ON/OFF status of the external brake within the specified 'Brake Error Detection Time' (b124) after a brake release signal. It occurs when the brake control function (b120 = 01) is enabled, suggesting a problem with the brake itself, its confirmation signal, or incorrect timing settings, potentially leading to unsafe load control.

Common Causes

  • Mechanical fault in the external brake mechanism preventing it from releasing or engaging correctly within the set time.
  • Brake switch (e.g., position sensor) signal not reaching the inverter's input terminal (e.g., S3) due to wiring fault, open circuit, or contact problem.
  • Brake control relay or contactor not energizing/de-energizing the brake coil properly, or the brake coil itself is faulty (open circuit, short circuit).
  • Parameter b124 (Brake Error Detection Time) set too short for the actual mechanical brake release/engage time, leading to a premature trip.
  • External brake power supply (e.g., 24VDC, 230VAC) unstable or incorrect, leading to delayed or incomplete brake operation.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Measure the voltage supplied to the external brake coil to ensure it is correct and stable (e.g., 24VDC, 230VAC) when the brake release signal is active.

  2. 2

Verify the operation of the external brake mechanism visually and mechanically by observing its release and engagement. Listen for the distinct click.

  3. 3

Monitor the status of the brake switch input (e.g., S3 or S4) at the inverter's digital input terminals using the digital operator's monitor menu (e.g., U1-XX).

  4. 4

Disconnect power. Use a multimeter to check for continuity of the brake switch wiring from the brake mechanism to the inverter's input terminal.

  5. 5

Temporarily increase the parameter b124 (Brake Error Detection Time) by 20-50% to see if the fault clears, suggesting a timing mismatch.

  6. 6

Measure the resistance of the brake coil to check for an open circuit or short circuit; compare this reading with the manufacturer's specifications.
