This fault occurs when the VSD's internal thermal model (I²t calculation) determines that the motor's thermal capacity has been exceeded, indicating a prolonged overload condition. The drive trips to protect the motor from overheating and insulation damage. This is a critical protective function to prevent premature motor failure and costly repairs, especially during sustained operation above nominal current.
Click steps to track your progress.
Measure actual motor current (AOUT) on the VSD display and compare to the motor nameplate rated current (FLA). Reduce mechanical load if exceeding FLA.
Verify VSD parameter P1-04 (motor rated current) exactly matches the motor nameplate FLA.
Inspect motor cooling fan and fins for blockages. Ensure the ambient temperature around the motor is within specified limits.
Adjust the motor thermal time constant parameter (P1-51) based on motor manufacturer data, or increase it by 10-20% as a temporary measure.
Monitor the VSD's I²t thermal utilization (e.g., ITEMP on display) to understand thermal accumulation. Adjust operation to allow for cooling.
