OLF

Motor Overload

Schneider Electric · ALTIVAR 28 Variable Speed Drive

What does OLF mean?

This fault signifies that the motor's I²t thermal protection has tripped due to a prolonged overload condition, indicating excessive current draw over an extended period. Sustained motor overload will lead to winding insulation breakdown and permanent motor damage.

Common Causes

  • Mechanical overload on the motor shaft (e.g., jammed bearings, increased friction, product blockage).
  • Incorrect motor rated current (Parameter P0-04) or motor overload protection (Parameter P1-03) setting in the drive.
  • Motor cooling fan failure or obstructed cooling fins on the motor itself.
  • Excessive duty cycle (e.g., continuous operation at peak torque) beyond motor's thermal capacity.
  • High ambient temperature around the motor, reducing its ability to dissipate heat.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Measure actual motor operating current (drive display parameter P0-07) and compare to motor nameplate rated current.

  2. 2

    2. Verify motor nameplate data (especially rated current and service factor) against drive parameters (P0-04, P1-03).

  3. 3

    3. Check motor shaft for free rotation (power off) and inspect mechanical load for obstructions or excessive friction.

  4. 4

    4. Inspect motor cooling fan for damage or obstruction and ensure motor cooling fins are clear of dust/debris.

  5. 5

    5. Monitor motor surface temperature with an IR thermometer to detect excessive heating.
