E46.3

Internal communication timeout

SEW Eurodrive · MOVIDRIVE system

What does E46.3 mean?

Communication between the inverter and the safety option has been interrupted, potentially due to a loose connection or a subcomponent fault within the safety option. This prevents proper safety function and inhibits the output stage, compromising system safety.

Common Causes

  • Poor contact or intermittent connection between the safety option card and the inverter's backplane connector.
  • Electromagnetic interference (EMI) affecting the internal communication bus within the inverter.
  • Failure of an internal component on either the inverter mainboard or the safety option card responsible for bus communication.
  • Corrupted firmware on the safety option card or the inverter's main CPU leading to communication protocol errors.
  • Transient voltage fluctuations on the internal power rails supplying the communication chips.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Remove and carefully re-insert the safety option card, confirming a firm and secure connection.

  2. 2

Inspect the edge connector of the safety option card and the corresponding slot on the inverter for bent pins or debris.

  3. 3

Check for proper grounding and shielding of the inverter cabinet to mitigate potential external EMI.

  4. 4

Monitor internal diagnostic logs of the inverter for other related communication bus errors.

  5. 5

Measure internal power supply voltages (e.g., 5VDC, 3.3VDC) at test points on the inverter's mainboard to ensure stability.
