F13.14

Communication

SEW Eurodrive · MOVIDRIVE system

What does F13.14 mean?

There is faulty communication with Encoder 1, preventing the drive from receiving reliable data. This can be caused by issues with the encoder's voltage supply, electromagnetic interference (EMC), or damaged/incorrect wiring, leading to loss of position feedback and control.

Common Causes

  • Intermittent voltage supply fluctuations (below 20VDC or above 28VDC) to the encoder affecting data integrity.
  • External electromagnetic interference (EMI) causing data corruption on the encoder feedback lines.
  • Degraded or damaged encoder communication cable, leading to intermittent signal loss or short circuits.
  • Incorrect or absent shielding connection on the encoder cable, allowing noise ingress into the data signals.
  • Defective encoder internal communication circuit causing unreliable data transmission or corrupted packets.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Measure the encoder supply voltage (e.g., +24VDC) at the encoder connector and verify stability under operating conditions.

  2. 2

Inspect the entire length of the encoder communication cable for physical damage, pinching, or tight bend radii.

  3. 3

Verify the continuity of the encoder cable shield from the drive's SG terminal to the encoder's metal housing (less than 1 Ohm).

  4. 4

Check for nearby high-power switching devices (e.g., VFDs, contactors) that could be sources of EMI and consider rerouting cables.

  5. 5

Monitor the encoder raw data (P7-04) for consistency and sudden drops or spikes using the drive's diagnostic tools.
