F84

Insulation

Vacon · NXP AFE-II Drive

What does F84 mean?

This fault is triggered by a digital input fault, indicating an insulation problem detected by an external monitoring device. This points to a potential electrical leakage somewhere in the system.

Common Causes

  • Motor cable insulation degradation or damage (e.g., chafing, crushing) allowing leakage current to protective earth (PE) or conduit.
  • Accumulation of moisture or conductive dust within the motor terminal box, drive enclosure, or external junction boxes creating low resistance paths to ground.
  • Breakdown of motor winding insulation (phase-to-ground) due to overvoltage transients, sustained overheating, or aging, leading to ground fault detection.
  • External ground fault monitoring device (e.g., RCD) tripping due to excessive capacitive leakage current from long shielded motor cables or EMI filters.
  • Damage to the main input power cable insulation or terminal connections allowing leakage to the control cabinet frame or protective earth.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Isolate power to the drive and motor. Using a megohmmeter set to 1000VDC, measure insulation resistance between each motor phase (U, V, W) and the motor frame. A healthy value is typically >100MΩ.

  2. 2

    2. Disconnect motor cables from the drive. Measure insulation resistance between each output terminal (U, V, W) and protective earth (PE) on the drive side. Repeat for input terminals (L1, L2, L3) to PE.

  3. 3

    3. Carefully inspect all power cables (input, motor, braking resistor) for physical damage, signs of overheating, or water ingress. Pay close attention to cable glands and terminal connections.

  4. 4

    4. Check the wiring of the external insulation monitoring device to the drive's digital input (e.g., DI7). Verify the device's trip setting and its functional integrity.

  5. 5

    5. Inspect the inside of the drive, motor terminal box, and control cabinet for condensation, moisture, or conductive foreign objects. Ensure proper sealing and environmental control (IP rating).
