Soft Charge Circuit Fault

Yaskawa · F7 Drive

What does UV3 mean?

The pre-charge contactor, responsible for managing the initial charging of the DC bus capacitors, opened unexpectedly while the drive was running. This often indicates a mechanical issue with the contactor itself, such as dirty or worn contacts, preventing proper mechanical operation or causing premature opening.

Common Causes

  • Mechanical failure of the pre-charge contactor (e.g., stuck open contacts, coil failure) preventing proper engagement or disengagement.
  • Control circuit fault (e.g., auxiliary contact malfunction, wiring error) signaling the pre-charge contactor to open prematurely during operation.
  • Intermittent power supply to the pre-charge contactor coil, causing it to drop out during normal drive operation.
  • Damage or excessive wear on the pre-charge resistors, leading to an abnormal charging current profile that triggers the fault logic.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Cycle power to the drive and listen for the distinct 'clunk' of the pre-charge contactor engaging during startup; verify visual engagement if accessible.

  2. 2

Measure the coil voltage of the pre-charge contactor during drive operation to confirm it maintains its rated voltage (e.g., 24VDC, 110VAC).

  3. 3

Inspect the auxiliary contacts of the pre-charge contactor for proper functioning and clean engagement, checking for physical damage or wear.

  4. 4

Check wiring connections to the pre-charge contactor, including coil terminals and auxiliary contact feedback, for looseness or corrosion.

  5. 5

Measure the resistance of the pre-charge resistors (typically internal, may require drive disassembly or specialized testing) to ensure they are within manufacturer's specifications.
