Motor Short Circuit

¿Qué significa SCF ?

This fault indicates an electrical short circuit between motor phases, from a phase to ground, or a significant ground leakage current at the drive's output. This is an extremely dangerous condition that can cause severe damage to the drive's output transistors (IGBTs) if not immediately resolved, potentially leading to drive destruction.

• Phase-to-phase short circuit within the motor windings or the motor cable insulation breakdown.
• Phase-to-ground short circuit in the motor windings or motor cable due to insulation failure or moisture ingress.
• Severe ground fault current exceeding the drive's protection threshold due to damaged equipment or cable.
• Internal failure of the drive's output IGBT module on one or more phases (though less common than external faults).
• Incorrectly rated or damaged surge protection devices on the motor output, leading to current leakage.

   1. De-energize the drive. Disconnect the motor cable completely from the drive's output terminals (U, V, W).

   2. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between all motor output terminals (U-V, V-W, W-U); readings should be balanced and non-zero (e.g., 0.1-10 Ohms).

   3. Measure the resistance from each motor output terminal (U, V, W) to the motor frame (ground); readings should be infinite or very high (e.g., >1 MOhm).

   4. Perform an insulation resistance test (Megger) on the motor cables: phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground (minimum 1 MOhm at 500VDC).

   5. If the motor and cable test good, the fault may be internal to the drive (e.g., output IGBT failure), which typically requires drive replacement or factory service.
