4463

Software end location maximum (positioning process)

Beckhoff · TwinCAT 2 NC

What does 4463 mean?

The actual position of an axis has exceeded its configured software end location maximum while active monitoring is enabled. For servo axes, this limit is extended by the parameterized following error window. This indicates an attempt to move the axis beyond its defined safe operating range, potentially risking mechanical damage or collisions.

Common Causes

  • Software end limit maximum parameter (e.g., P3-05) is set too low for the mechanical travel range or the current machine position.
  • Excessive following error (deviation between commanded and actual position) caused the actual position to exceed the software limit plus the following error window (P6-06).
  • Incorrect homing procedure or offset parameter (e.g., P4-05), leading to an inaccurate absolute position reference.
  • Mechanical overtravel of the axis, pushing the encoder beyond its expected range, which then triggers the software limit.
  • Velocity or acceleration parameters (e.g., P2-01, P2-02) are set too high, causing overshoot past the defined software limits.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Verify the configured software end location maximum (e.g., P3-05, SW Limit Max) and compare it against the actual mechanical travel limits of the axis.

  2. 2

    2. Monitor the following error (e.g., diagnostic D-02) during axis motion and adjust the following error gain parameter (e.g., P5-04) if the deviation is consistently high.

  3. 3

    3. Review and re-execute the homing procedure (e.g., P4-01, Homing Method) to establish an accurate absolute position reference, checking limit switch activation.

  4. 4

    4. Inspect the mechanical system for any physical obstructions or slippage that could allow the axis to exceed its intended travel range.

  5. 5

    5. Lower the axis acceleration (P2-02) or maximum velocity (P2-01) parameters to reduce overshoot, especially during high-speed movements near limits.
