Motor Thermal Overload

Danfoss · VLT Micro Drive FC 51

What does 80 mean?

This fault indicates that the motor's thermal model or external thermal sensor has detected an overheating condition. Continuous operation in an overheated state will degrade motor insulation, leading to premature motor failure and costly repairs or replacements. The drive trips to protect the motor.

Additional Steps

Steps 1–2 are listed in Priority Fix.

  1. 3

Measure the actual motor current and compare it to the motor's nameplate rated current; reduce mechanical load if exceeding ratings.

  2. 4

Ensure the motor thermal protection parameters (e.g., motor current, motor data, ETR settings) in the drive are correctly configured.

  3. 5

If an external motor thermistor is used, check its wiring and functionality.
