10036

Encoder reading wrong or Hall fault (_ecENCODER_READING_WRONG)

ABB · ACS850 Standard Program Firmware

What does 10036 mean?

This error indicates a significant discrepancy (at least 70 degrees) between the measured Hall transition angle and the electrical angle used for motor control, suggesting either an encoder reading issue or a Hall sensor fault. This will lead to improper motor commutation, poor control performance, and potentially motor damage.

Common Causes

  • Loose encoder coupling or mounting, causing mechanical slippage between the motor shaft and the encoder body.
  • Damage to the encoder feedback cable (e.g., crushed, severed wires), leading to intermittent or incorrect signal transmission.
  • Faulty Hall effect sensors within the motor (if applicable), providing incorrect commutation feedback.
  • Incorrect encoder wiring (e.g., A/B phase swapped, Hall signals misconnected) to the drive's encoder input terminals (e.g., X10).
  • Encoder failure (e.g., internal circuitry damage, deteriorating optics) causing erroneous position readings.
  • Motor parameter misconfiguration (e.g., P1-03 (Motor Pole Pairs)) leading to an incorrect electrical angle calculation by the drive.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Mechanically inspect the encoder coupling for tightness and concentricity with the motor shaft; verify encoder mounting screws are torqued correctly.

  2. 2

Using a multimeter, check continuity and shielding of the encoder cable from the encoder to the drive's input terminals (e.g., X10); inspect for physical damage.

  3. 3

Verify the Hall sensor signals (if present) at the drive's input terminals (e.g., X10) using an oscilloscope to ensure clean transitions and correct sequencing.

  4. 4

Review the motor and encoder wiring against the drive's installation manual, specifically confirming correct phase (A, B, Z) and Hall signal (U, V, W) connections.

  5. 5

Perform an encoder auto-tune or commutation alignment routine on the drive, if available (e.g., parameter P7-01 (Encoder Auto-Tune)), to re-establish correct motor-encoder phasing.

  6. 6

Temporarily replace the encoder with a known good unit to determine if the encoder itself is faulty.
