4981

External temperature

ABB · ACS880

What does 4981 mean?

An external temperature sensor (either 1 or 2) connected to the drive has registered a temperature beyond its configured fault limit. This indicates a potential overheating condition in the monitored equipment (e.g., motor), risking damage if not addressed.

Common Causes

  • External temperature sensor (e.g., PTC, NTC, Pt100) exceeding its configured fault limit due to actual overheating of the monitored component (e.g., motor winding).
  • Incorrect temperature fault limit (P5-10 or P5-11) set too low in the drive.
  • Damage or short circuit in the external sensor's wiring to the drive's analog input terminals (e.g., AI1 or AI2).
  • Faulty external temperature sensor providing incorrect readings.
  • Improper sensor type selected in drive parameter (e.g., P5-01 or P5-02 for sensor 1/2 type).

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Measure the actual temperature of the monitored component (e.g., motor casing) using an infrared thermometer.

  2. 2

Verify the wiring of the external temperature sensor to the drive's input terminals (e.g., AI1/AI2) for continuity and insulation.

  3. 3

Check the drive parameter P5-10 (Ext. Temp. 1 Fault Limit) or P5-11 (Ext. Temp. 2 Fault Limit) against the sensor's specifications.

  4. 4

Measure the resistance or voltage output of the external sensor directly and compare to its characteristic curve for the measured temperature.

  5. 5

Confirm drive parameter P5-01 (Ext. Temp. 1 Type) or P5-02 (Ext. Temp. 2 Type) matches the physically installed sensor (e.g., PTC or Pt100).
