5698

Unknown power unit fault

ABB · ACS880

What does 5698 mean?

An unidentified logical fault has occurred within the power unit. This suggests a deep internal problem with the power unit's control or processing, possibly due to corrupted firmware, a hardware malfunction, or an unexpected state. Unresolved, this prevents the drive from operating reliably and requires expert attention.

Common Causes

  • Internal diagnostic hardware failure (e.g., ASIC, DSP) on the power board.
  • Corrupted firmware in the power unit's dedicated control processor, leading to erratic operation.
  • Intermittent internal communication fault between the power unit and the control unit.
  • Power unit internal temperature exceeding design limits (e.g. >90°C) causing component instability.
  • Undervoltage on internal power supply rails (e.g. 5VDC, 15VDC) within the power unit.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Record all active fault codes and parameter settings (e.g., P0-01, P0-02) before proceeding.

  2. 2

Power cycle the drive by disconnecting main supply voltage for 60 seconds, then reapply.

  3. 3

Verify internal power supply voltages (e.g., 5VDC, 15VDC) on test points if available on the power unit, comparing against manufacturer specifications.

  4. 4

Check cooling fan operation and ensure heatsinks are clear of dust, verifying ambient temperature is within the drive's operating range (e.g. 0-40°C).

  5. 5

Attempt a firmware re-installation for the power unit, if supported by the drive's maintenance tools.

  6. 6

Isolate the power unit and perform internal component resistance checks (e.g., IGBTs, diodes) using a multimeter.
