7380

Encoder internal

ABB · ACS880

What does 7380 mean?

An internal fault has occurred within the encoder system itself, indicating a problem with the encoder's electronics or processing. This is a critical fault preventing accurate speed/position feedback, rendering closed-loop control impossible. This typically requires specialized assistance.

Common Causes

  • Encoder's internal electronics malfunction or processing unit failure.
  • Corrupted firmware within the smart encoder (e.g., Hiperface, EnDat) requiring a firmware update.
  • Unstable power supply to the encoder causing intermittent operation (e.g., ripple on 5VDC or 15VDC supply).
  • Communication bus error between the drive and smart encoder (e.g., corrupted data packets on the serial interface).
  • Encoder overheating due to environmental conditions, restricted airflow, or internal component failure.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Power cycle the drive and encoder system to attempt a reset of the internal encoder electronics.

  2. 2

Check the encoder's own status LEDs (if available) for specific error indications (e.g., green/red status).

  3. 3

Verify stable 5VDC or 15VDC power supply to the encoder at the encoder connector (e.g., pins 1 and 2) with an oscilloscope.

  4. 4

Inspect the encoder communication cable (e.g., Ethernet, RS485) for physical damage or loose connections.

  5. 5

If the fault persists after basic checks, the encoder itself is likely faulty and requires replacement.
