9081

External fault 1

ABB · ACS880

What does 9081 mean?

A fault has occurred in an external device connected to the drive's external event input 1. This general fault indicates a critical issue with peripheral equipment that the drive is monitoring and requires immediate attention. The drive will trip to protect itself or the process.

Common Causes

  • A connected external safety device (e.g., emergency stop button, safety gate switch) has activated, opening its contact.
  • Break in the control circuit wiring from the external device to the drive's digital input 1 (e.g., terminal DI1).
  • External fault source (e.g., thermal overload relay, pressure switch) connected to DI1 has tripped.
  • Incorrect configuration of digital input 1 function (e.g., P4-01 'DI1 function' set to an unexpected external fault type).

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Check the status of the external device (e.g., E-stop button, safety relay) connected to digital input DI1 for activation.

  2. 2

    2. Measure the voltage level at drive terminal DI1 (relative to GND) to confirm the input signal state (e.g., 24VDC for active, 0VDC for inactive).

  3. 3

    3. Perform a continuity test on the wiring from the external device's output contacts to the drive's DI1 terminal.

  4. 4

    4. Review parameter P4-01 'DI1 function' to verify that the configured input type matches the connected external device's function.

  5. 5

    5. If a safety circuit, verify the status of any associated safety relay (e.g., K1) and its output contacts feeding DI1.
