A581

Fan

ABB · ACS880

What does A581 mean?

A main cooling fan fault has been detected in the inverter unit. This indicates a failure in the drive's primary cooling system. While other fans may compensate and switching frequency might be reduced, prolonged operation with a main fan fault risks overheating and damage to the drive. The drive generates a warning and attempts to continue operation.

Common Causes

  • Main cooling fan operating below its optimal speed due to accumulated dust on blades or worn bearings.
  • Intermittent power supply to the fan, causing brief stops or reductions in speed not sufficient for immediate tripping.
  • Fan speed monitoring feedback circuit detecting marginal performance, indicating potential failure in the near future.
  • Excessive ambient temperature or heavy load operation causing the drive to demand higher fan speed than the fan can achieve.
  • Minor blockage in the airflow path that reduces fan efficiency but does not completely stop it.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Power down and visually inspect the main cooling fan for dust build-up on blades and heatsink, then clean thoroughly.

  2. 2

    2. Listen for abnormal noises (e.g., grinding, rattling) from the fan bearings while the drive is operating.

  3. 3

    3. Check the drive's internal temperature sensors (e.g., P0-01 'Drive temperature') to ensure they are within normal limits, ruling out external overheating.

  4. 4

    4. Verify the integrity of the fan power connection and look for any loose wires or corroded terminals.

  5. 5

    5. Log the operational hours of the fan (if available via parameter e.g., P5-42 'Fan operating hours') to determine if it's nearing end-of-life.
