A985

External warning 5

ABB · ACS880

What does A985 mean?

A fault has occurred in an external device connected to the drive's external event input 5. This general warning indicates an issue with peripheral equipment that the drive is monitoring. The drive continues to operate, but the external device needs attention.

Common Causes

  • A sensor providing feedback on a critical machine state (e.g., material jam, component presence) connected to digital input DI5 has reported an error.
  • An auxiliary control system providing status via DI5 has entered a fault condition, triggering the warning.
  • Noise interference on the signal line connected to DI5, leading to spurious warning activation.
  • A damaged or poorly terminated cable connecting the external device to drive terminal DI5.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Identify the external device connected to drive digital input DI5 (via parameter P5-05 'DI5 function').

  2. 2

Check the status and output of the external device. If it's a sensor, verify its detection state.

  3. 3

Measure the voltage at drive terminal DI5 and confirm it matches the expected logic level for a normal state.

  4. 4

Verify the shielding and grounding of the signal cable connected to drive terminal DI5 to mitigate potential noise issues.
