MOD Indicator Flashing Red

Module Recoverable Fault / Firmware Update / Connection Timeout

Allen-Bradley · Compact 5000 Digital I/O Modules

What does MOD Indicator Flashing Red mean?

The Module Status Indicator (MOD) flashes red, indicating one of several conditions: a module firmware update in progress, a failed firmware update attempt, a recoverable fault, or a connection timeout to the module. Module operation may be interrupted.

Common Causes

  • A firmware update is currently being applied to the module.
  • A previous attempt to update module firmware failed.
  • The module has detected a recoverable fault condition (e.g., minor internal issue, configuration error).
  • The connection from the controller to the module has timed out due to communication loss (e.g., network cable failure).

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

If a firmware update is in progress, allow the update process to finish. Do not interrupt power.

  2. 2

If a firmware update failed, attempt the firmware update again following proper procedures.

  3. 3

To clear a recoverable fault, cycle module power or click 'Reset Module' on the Module Info page in Studio 5000 Logix Designer.

  4. 4

View the 'Connection page' in Studio 5000 Logix Designer to determine if a connection timeout occurred and investigate physical causes such as a damaged Ethernet cable.
