Short Circuit diagnostic

Safety Output Short Circuit Diagnostic Active

Allen-Bradley · Compact 5000 Digital I/O Modules

What does Short Circuit diagnostic mean?

A diagnostic value of '1' indicates a general short circuit condition has been detected on a safety output. This can occur due to a short to 24V DC, ground, or between output points, causing the module to fault and turn off the output.

Common Causes

  • Output point wiring shorted to 24V DC due to insulation breakdown or incorrect connection.
  • Output point wiring shorted to system ground due to insulation breakdown or contact.
  • Output points in a pair (e.g., Ptxx and Ptxx+1) shorted to each other.
  • Damage to the field wiring or the connected load causing a low-resistance path.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Identify the specific output point Ptxx where the fault is detected via Studio 5000 Logix Designer diagnostics.

  2. 2

Examine the physical wiring connected to output point Ptxx for any damage, improper termination, or contact that could cause a short to 24V DC or system ground.

  3. 3

With power removed from the module and field devices, use a multimeter to measure resistance between the output terminal Ptxx and 24V DC, and between Ptxx and system ground; expect an open circuit (high resistance).

  4. 4

If the output point is part of a paired output, measure resistance between the two output terminals of the pair to check for a short.

  5. 5

If the short circuit was to 24V DC, cycle power to the entire module to reset the diagnostic.
