F039

Phase V to Gnd

Allen-Bradley · PowerFlex 520-series Adjustable Frequency

What does F039 mean?

A ground fault has been detected specifically on the V-phase output between the drive and the motor. This points to insulation failure in the V-phase motor winding or its connecting cable, creating an unwanted current path to earth ground. This is a severe electrical safety hazard and can cause significant equipment damage.

Common Causes

  • Motor cable insulation breakdown on V-phase due to aging, excessive bending, or rodent damage, causing a short to ground.
  • Internal motor winding insulation failure on V-phase, possibly from sustained overvoltage, partial discharge, or physical impact.
  • Conductive debris or moisture accumulation on the V-phase connections within the drive output terminals or motor terminal box.
  • Improper grounding of the motor or motor frame, allowing stray currents to seek unintended paths through the V-phase insulation.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Disconnect the motor leads (U, V, W) from the drive output terminals (T1, T2, T3).

  2. 2

Perform an insulation resistance test (megohm test) from the V-phase motor lead to motor frame ground. A reading below 1 Megohm indicates a fault.

  3. 3

If the motor cable is suspected, disconnect the cable from the motor and test the V-phase conductor to cable shield/ground at the drive end.

  4. 4

Inspect the motor junction box and the V-phase winding connections for signs of wear, discoloration, or foreign material.

  5. 5

If the fault is localized to the motor cable, replace the entire motor power cable with correctly sized and shielded cable.

  6. 6

If the fault is within the motor windings, schedule motor removal for repair or replacement.
