FB ESTOP Bit 5

E-Stop EDM Monitoring Error - EDM2

Beckhoff · TwinSAFE Logic FB

What does FB ESTOP Bit 5 mean?

An External Device Monitoring (EDM) error has been detected for the EDM2 feedback loop of the FB ESTOP. This typically means that the feedback from the safety contactors or relays, which are expected to open after an E-Stop activation, has not been received within the allowed time or in the correct state. This indicates a failure in the safety output circuit or feedback path, preventing safe operation.

Common Causes

  • The auxiliary feedback contact of the external safety contactor K2 is not making or breaking contact reliably for EDM2.
  • An open circuit or poor connection in the EDM feedback wiring between contactor K2 and the safety controller's EDM2 input (e.g., terminal X6.1).
  • Safety contactor K2's main contacts are physically sticking, preventing its auxiliary feedback contact from operating.
  • The configured EDM monitoring time (e.g., P_EDM_MON_DELAY_2) in the safety controller is exceeded before feedback is received.
  • Incorrect type or faulty auxiliary contact block installed on safety contactor K2.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

De-energize the circuit and confirm safety contactor K2 is de-energized. Measure continuity across its EDM feedback auxiliary contact (e.g., K2-B1, K2-B2), confirming it is open.

  2. 2

Energize the safety circuit and verify K2 pulls in. Measure continuity across its EDM feedback auxiliary contact, which should now be closed.

  3. 3

Inspect the auxiliary contact block of contactor K2 for proper mounting, cleanliness, and wear.

  4. 4

Check the resistance of both EDM feedback wires from contactor K2 to the safety controller's EDM2 input terminals.

  5. 5

Review the safety controller's parameter settings for EDM2 (e.g., P_EDM_FEEDBACK_SOURCE_2) to ensure it correctly identifies the feedback path.
