Internal fault

Danfoss · VLT AutomationDrive FC 301/302

What does 38 mean?

A general internal fault has occurred within the drive. A specific sub-code number, as defined in Table 6.5, is shown to provide more detail about the nature of the internal issue.

Common Causes

  • Unexpected internal software error or exception due to corrupted firmware or memory issue.
  • Malfunction of internal hardware components such as control board CPU, memory, or communication ASICs.
  • Over-temperature condition detected by an internal sensor (e.g., heatsink, control board) not specifically reported as a thermal fault.
  • Transient voltage spike or electrical noise on the control board's internal power supply lines.
  • Corruption of internal configuration data or critical system parameters.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Note the exact sub-code number displayed alongside the '38' fault on the drive's LCP, as this indicates the specific internal issue.

  2. 2

    2. Power cycle the drive by completely disconnecting input power for at least 60 seconds, then reapply power to clear temporary states.

  3. 3

    3. Attempt to clear the fault via the drive's LCP (e.g., using the reset button or P16-90 reset parameter).

  4. 4

    4. Verify the drive's main firmware version (P15-05) and check for available updates if the sub-code points to a known software bug.

  5. 5

    5. Record all diagnostic values available (e.g., P16-90 Fault Log, P16-91 Warning Log) before clearing, and contact technical support with the full fault log information including the sub-code.
