Hoist mechanical brake

Danfoss · VLT HVAC Drive High Power

What does 22 mean?

This warning/alarm signals a problem with the hoist mechanical brake control. It can be triggered if the required torque reference is not achieved before the timeout specified in parameter 2-27 Torque Ramp Up Time expires, or if the expected brake feedback is not received within the time limits set by parameter 2-23 Activate Brake Delay and parameter 2-25 Brake Release Time. This prevents proper control of the mechanical brake, which is critical for hoisting applications.

Common Causes

  • Mechanical brake failing to open fully or sticking, preventing motor rotation.
  • Incorrect setting of parameter 2-27 Torque limit before brake release timeout (duration too short).
  • Motor output torque insufficient to overcome the load and fully release the brake (e.g., motor parameters P1-20/P1-22 incorrect).
  • Malfunctioning brake control circuit (e.g., faulty brake relay, brake rectifier module).
  • Motor encoder feedback issue, leading to inaccurate speed or position information affecting torque control (if encoder present).
  • Brake coil wiring open circuit or short circuit (e.g., measured at terminals 96/97).

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Measure the actual current drawn by the brake coil at the brake terminals (e.g., 96/97) when commanded to open. Verify against nameplate current.

  2. 2

Check parameter 2-27 Torque limit before brake release timeout for appropriate duration (e.g., 0.5-2.0 seconds) relative to brake response time.

  3. 3

Verify the mechanical brake gap (e.g., 0.2-0.5 mm) and ensure free movement of the brake pads when energized.

  4. 4

Confirm motor parameters (e.g., P1-20 Motor Rated Current, P1-22 Motor Rated Voltage) are correctly configured for the connected motor.

  5. 5

Inspect the brake rectifier and any associated control relays for proper operation (e.g., measure output voltage to brake coil).

  6. 6

Observe motor current (P5-03 Actual Motor Current) during brake release attempt to confirm motor torque production.
