0012

OC2 Motor cable earth fault

Lenze · 9300 Series

What does 0012 mean?

One of the motor phases has made contact with earth, indicating an insulation fault in the motor cable. This condition poses a risk of electrical shock and further equipment damage.

Common Causes

  • Degradation or physical damage to the motor cable insulation, allowing a motor phase conductor (U, V, or W) to contact the cable shield or earth.
  • Water ingress into the motor cable or conduit system, compromising insulation resistance and creating a path to earth.
  • Improper cable gland installation where the cable insulation is pinched or cut, causing a direct short to the earthed gland body.
  • Accumulation of conductive dust or debris on the motor terminal block, bridging a phase conductor to the motor frame (earth).

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Power down the drive and disconnect the motor cable from the drive's output terminals (e.g., X2/U, X2/V, X2/W).

  2. 2

Disconnect the motor cable from the motor terminal block.

  3. 3

Perform an insulation resistance test on the motor cable: Measure between each phase conductor (U, V, W) and the cable shield/earth using a megohmmeter (e.g., 1000VDC).

  4. 4

Perform an insulation resistance test on the motor windings: Measure between each motor phase winding (U, V, W) and the motor frame (earth) at the motor terminal block.

  5. 5

Visually inspect the motor cable for any visible damage, especially at cable entries to the drive and motor, and inspect cable glands for proper sealing and termination.

  6. 6

Verify the grounding integrity of the motor frame and drive cabinet, ensuring low resistance to the main earth point (e.g., <0.1 Ohm).
