What does 086 mean?

The encoder for detecting motor temperature at X7 or X8 is indicating undefined values. This suggests a problem with the temperature sensor, its cable, or connection.

Common Causes

  • Open circuit or short circuit in the temperature sensor cable connected to terminal X7 or X8.
  • Faulty motor temperature sensor (e.g., PT100, KTY, PTC thermistor) within the motor winding, providing incorrect resistance values.
  • Incorrect temperature sensor type selection in drive parameters (e.g., C0035, C0036), leading to misinterpretation of resistance.
  • Loose or corroded connections at terminals X7 or X8 on the drive, or at the sensor connection within the motor terminal box.
  • Excessive electrical noise or ground loop issues affecting the low-level resistance measurement circuit.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Power down and lockout the drive. Disconnect the temperature sensor cable from terminal X7 or X8 on the drive.

  2. 2

    2. Measure the resistance of the temperature sensor directly at the sensor leads (or at the cable end) and compare to expected values at ambient temperature (e.g., ~100Ω for PT100 at 0°C).

  3. 3

    3. Using a multimeter, check continuity of the temperature sensor cable conductors from terminal X7/X8 to the sensor.

  4. 4

    4. Verify that the correct temperature sensor type is selected in the drive's configuration parameters (e.g., C0035 for sensor type, C0036 for threshold).

  5. 5

    5. Inspect terminals X7 or X8 on the drive and the sensor connections within the motor terminal box for looseness, corrosion, or damage.

  6. 6

    6. If possible, simulate a known temperature (e.g., using a resistance decade box) at the drive's X7/X8 input to verify drive processing of the signal.
