E41

Modbus Communication Error

Omron · MX2 Inverter

What does E41 mean?

This fault occurs when a Modbus communication timeout happens, typically when the inverter does not receive data within the period specified by the communication watchdog timer (C077). This often indicates a break in network communication or incorrect settings, causing the inverter to trip if 'trip' is selected as the error behavior (C076=00).

Common Causes

  • Incorrect Modbus communication parameters (e.g., C071 Baud rate, C072 Stop bits, C073 Parity, C074 Node address) mismatch between inverter and Modbus master.
  • Loose or damaged RS-485 communication cable (e.g., A/B twisted pair) between the inverter and the Modbus master.
  • Missing or incorrect termination resistors (typically 120 Ω) on the Modbus network, especially at the ends of the bus.
  • Modbus master device failure, incorrect polling logic, or timing issues causing timeouts.
  • Excessive electrical noise on the RS-485 bus causing data corruption or preventing reliable communication.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Verify Modbus communication parameters C071-C074 on the inverter match the Modbus master device settings exactly (baud rate, parity, stop bits, address).

  2. 2

    2. Inspect the RS-485 wiring (terminals S+, S- or A, B) for proper polarity, shorts, breaks, or loose connections along the entire bus.

  3. 3

    3. Check for correct 120 Ω termination resistors at both physical ends of the RS-485 bus, ensuring they are not missing or duplicated.

  4. 4

    4. Use an RS-485 analyzer or monitoring software to observe data traffic and identify communication errors, timeouts, or invalid frames on the bus.

  5. 5

    5. Temporarily disconnect other devices from the Modbus network to isolate if another device is causing interference or bus contention.
