Motor Overload

Schneider Electric · Altivar Machine ATV340 Programming

What does -OLF mean?

This fault indicates that the connected motor has experienced a prolonged overload condition, causing its estimated thermal state to exceed safe limits (118% as per page 75). This protects the motor windings from overheating and damage. It could be due to incorrect thermal protection settings or an undersized motor for the application, leading to premature motor failure.

Common Causes

  • Mechanical overload on the driven equipment (e.g., jammed conveyor, worn pump impeller, increased process resistance).
  • Motor thermal overload parameters (e.g., P2-01 motor FLA, P2-07 overload trip time) incorrectly set in the drive, causing premature tripping.
  • Undersized motor for the application, leading to continuous operation above its rated current and thermal limits.
  • Motor's internal or external cooling fan blocked or damaged, leading to insufficient motor cooling capacity.
  • Excessive motor acceleration or deceleration rates for the load inertia, resulting in high RMS current and thermal accumulation.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Measure actual motor current (U, V, W) using a clamp meter and compare to motor nameplate FLA.

  2. 2

Inspect the mechanical load for binding, seizing, or excessive friction that increases torque demand.

  3. 3

Verify motor rated current (Parameter P2-01) and motor overload factor (Parameter P2-07) are set correctly in the drive.

  4. 4

Check motor cooling fan operation and clean any debris blocking motor cooling fins to ensure proper airflow.

  5. 5

If the fault persists and all parameters are correct, consider a larger motor or drive, or reduce the mechanical load on the motor.
