F-20

System malfunction

SEW Eurodrive · MCBSM

What does F-20 mean?

An internal system malfunction has occurred within the inverter electronics, potentially influenced by electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues. This fault causes an immediate switch-off and inhibits operation, signifying a critical internal hardware or software problem that requires expert attention.

Common Causes

  • Inconsistent data detected during internal memory read/write operations (e.g., checksum error for RAM or flash memory).
  • Failure of an internal peripheral component (e.g., timer, PWM generator) controlled by the main processor.
  • Severe electromagnetic interference causing bit flips in data registers or corruption during internal data transfer.
  • Power supply decoupling capacitor failure on the control board, leading to noise on digital signal lines.
  • Over-temperature condition specifically on the main control board components, even if the general inverter temperature (P0-99) is within limits.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Check for any recent parameter changes that might have overloaded the internal memory or caused conflicts, then try reverting to previous known-good settings.

  2. 2

Perform a factory reset (e.g., P0-00 = 1) and re-parameterize the inverter with known good settings, ensuring all values are valid.

  3. 3

Implement enhanced EMC mitigation measures, such as ferrite cores on control cables or improved cabinet shielding and grounding.

  4. 4

Ensure the inverter's mounting surface is flat and provides good thermal contact if it relies on conduction cooling to the cabinet backplate.

  5. 5

Measure the internal ambient temperature within the control cabinet where the inverter is installed using a calibrated sensor, especially near its control board.
