F-23

System malfunction

SEW Eurodrive · MCBSM

What does F-23 mean?

An internal system malfunction has occurred within the inverter electronics, potentially influenced by electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues. This fault causes an immediate switch-off and inhibits operation, signifying a critical internal hardware or software problem that requires expert attention.

Common Causes

  • Hardware error detected during a periodic self-test of memory or processor integrity.
  • Critical software exception (e.g., null pointer dereference, division by zero) within the inverter's firmware.
  • Inconsistent state in the power stage control logic, possibly due to a sensor reading mismatch or driver error.
  • Corrupted or invalid parameter configuration causing the internal control algorithm to execute erroneously.
  • External electrical disturbance (e.g., voltage spike on motor output) propagating back into sensitive control electronics.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Reset all inverter parameters to factory defaults (e.g., P0-00 = 1) and meticulously re-enter all motor and application settings from backup.

  2. 2

Perform a basic insulation resistance test (megger) on the motor windings and motor cable to rule out internal electrical damage.

  3. 3

Ensure proper routing and separation of power and control cables to minimize inductive coupling and EMI.

  4. 4

Temporarily bypass any complex control logic (e.g., fieldbus control, advanced motion profiles) and operate the inverter via local I/O for basic function testing.

  5. 5

Monitor the line voltage and current to the inverter during operation using a power quality analyzer to detect anomalies.
