Thermal overload of motor

SEW Eurodrive · MOVIMOT Field Distributor

What does 84 mean?

The motor has experienced a thermal overload, or its internal winding thermostat (TH) has tripped. This can be caused by excessive load, high ambient temperatures, or incorrect drive configuration settings for motor protection.

Common Causes

  • Motor operating under excessive mechanical load.
  • High ambient temperature around the motor or insufficient cooling.
  • Heat accumulation around the motor due to poor ventilation.
  • DIP switch S1/5 not set to "ON" when the MOVIMOT inverter is installed close to the motor.
  • Incorrect setting of DIP switch S1/6 for MOVIMOT and motor combinations with a lower power rating.
  • Mismatch between drive and MOVIMOT frequency inverter, signaling error shortly after initial release.
  • Motor temperature monitoring (TH winding thermostat) tripped when MOVIMOT extra function 5 is selected.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

If the MOVIMOT inverter is installed close to the motor, verify DIP switch S1/5 is set to "ON".

  2. 2

For MOVIMOT and motor combinations with one lower power rating, check the setting of DIP switch S1/6.

  3. 3

Reduce the ambient temperature surrounding the motor or improve cooling.

  4. 4

Prevent heat accumulation around the motor by ensuring adequate ventilation.

  5. 5

Reduce the mechanical load on the motor.

  6. 6

Increase the motor speed if appropriate for the application.
