Overtemperature Motor (via TH)

SEW Eurodrive · MOVIMOT MM..C

What does 84 mean?

Fault 84 'Overtemperature Motor' is tripped if the TH (thermal sensor) connected to the direction of rotation terminals (L and R) opens due to excessive motor temperature. This fault occurs in conjunction with MOVIMOT® inverter mounting close to the motor (P2.A option or in a field distributor) and when both direction of rotation terminals are opened by the TH. This indicates the motor has reached a critical temperature, triggering its thermal protection.

Common Causes

  • Motor overtemperature causing the TH (thermal sensor) to trip.
  • TH connected to direction of rotation terminals L and R.
  • Both direction of rotation terminals (L and R) are opened by the TH.
  • Standard MOVIMOT motor protection function deactivated via DIP switch S1/5 = ON, allowing TH to be the primary protection.
  • Mains voltage is present.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Check the motor temperature and allow it to cool down if it's currently overheated.

  2. 2

Verify the wiring of the TH (thermal sensor) to the direction of rotation terminals L and R. Ensure proper connection and functionality of the TH.

  3. 3

Measure the resistance across the TH terminals (L and R) to confirm it is open-circuit (tripped) or closed-circuit (normal).

  4. 4

Verify DIP switch S1/5 setting — if motor protection is desired via the MOVIMOT's internal function, ensure S1/5 is OFF.

  5. 5

Inspect the motor for proper ventilation, fan functionality, or excessive load causing overheating.
