Thermal overload of brake coil or brake coil defective

SEW Eurodrive · MOVIMOT MM..C

What does 89 mean?

This fault indicates that the brake coil has overheated or is defective. It may be caused by frequent braking operations, excessively short ramp times, a mismatch between the drive and the MOVIMOT® frequency inverter, or incorrect internal resistance of the brake coil.

Common Causes

  • Ramp time set too short, leading to excessive brake usage.
  • Defective brake coil.
  • Mismatch between the drive (brake coil) and MOVIMOT® frequency inverter, especially if the fault occurs shortly after initial enable.
  • Incorrect setting of DIP switch S3/2 (AS-Interface) or S1/6 (Standard Design) for MOVIMOT® and motor with one lower power increment.
  • Incorrect internal resistance of the brake.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Extend the set ramp time to reduce brake cycling.

  2. 2

Perform a brake inspection (refer to the "Inspection and Maintenance" section of the manual).

  3. 3

If the fault occurs shortly after initial enable, check the combination of the drive (brake coil) and MOVIMOT® frequency inverter for compatibility.

  4. 4

For MOVIMOT® and motor combinations with one lower power increment, check the position of DIP switch S3/2 (AS-Interface) or S1/6 (Standard Design).

  5. 5

Check the internal resistance of the brake (refer to the "Technical Data" section of the manual).

  6. 6

Switch off the 24 VDC supply voltage to reset the fault.
