Thermal Overload of Motor

SEW Eurodrive · MOVIMOT® MM..D with AC Motor DT/DV / Operating Instruc

What does 84 mean?

This fault indicates that the motor has experienced a thermal overload, meaning its operating temperature has exceeded safe limits. This can occur due to excessive load, inadequate cooling, or incorrect motor protection settings, posing a risk of motor winding damage.

Common Causes

  • Standard MOVIMOT motor protection function via DIP switch S1/5='ON' is deactivated, especially when MOVIMOT is installed close to the motor.
  • Incorrect setting of DIP switch S1/6 for 'MOVIMOT and motor with one lower power rating' combinations.
  • High ambient temperature around the motor or heat build-up due to insufficient ventilation.
  • Excessive mechanical load on the motor or motor operating at too low a speed.
  • Temperature monitoring in the motor (TH winding thermostat) has tripped, particularly when using MOVIMOT with extra function 5.
  • Incorrect combination of the drive and MOVIMOT inverter.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

If the MOVIMOT inverter is installed close to the motor, set DIP switch S1/5 to 'ON'.

  2. 2

For 'MOVIMOT and motor with one lower power rating' combinations, check the setting of DIP switch S1/6.

  3. 3

Lower the ambient temperature surrounding the motor and prevent heat build-up by ensuring adequate ventilation.

  4. 4

Reduce the mechanical load on the motor or increase its operating speed.

  5. 5

Check the combination of the drive and MOVIMOT inverter if the fault is signaled shortly after the first enable.

  6. 6

If the TH winding thermostat (with extra function 5) has tripped, reduce the load on the motor.
